Dr Kalpesh Parmar

Kal has been involved in treating sports and musculoskeletal related injuries since 2001; he spent 5 years in Australia, including a year at the Australian Institute of Sport where he completed a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine, prior to commencing advanced specialist training with the Australasian College of Sports Physicians. This training was interrupted when he relocated to the UK to take up the position as Club Doctor for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club where he stayed for over 2 years before concentrating on his private practice in Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Current positions are as follows: Club Doctor, Leicester Tigers Rugby Union; Honorary Physician British Association for Performing Arts Medicine; Honorary Clinical Teacher, Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, University College London.

He has worked with sports from grass routes through to National Teams, having been on tour with the National Australian Men's and Women's Senior Hockey Teams as well as Australian National Football teams. Other clubs have included coverage for The Australian Cricket Team 2009 Ashes 5th test and 2009 One Day International series; The Wallabies û whilst on tour in the UK in 2008; The Brumbies Rugby Union and Sydney Swans AFL reserve teams and the Sydney International Tennis tournament. He also has recently attended the World University Games in Serbia in 2009 as Team Doctor to the Australian Team.

Clinical interests include General Sports Medicine, groin pain in sport, Performing Arts Medicine and injection therapy (autologous blood, PRP, sclerosants and corticosteroid) using ultrasound guidance.

ôI wanted to pursue a career in sports and exercise medicine ever since I was a junior doctor and attended a sports medicine course at Lilleshall National Sports centre in Shropshire. It proved harder than I thought to find the correct career progression and so I underwent basic surgical training, with an emphasis on orthopaedics, got the required qualifications and left for Australia to undertake specialist sports medicine training which has a clearly defined, well established training program. In 2006 I returned to the UK to work with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club as their Club Doctor and then left 2 years later to concentrate on private practice sports medicine. The opportunity came to work for one of EuropeÆs top Rugby Union sides (Leicester Tigers), which I took up at the start of the 2009/10 season. This sees me back in my hometown of Leicester a couple of days a week, which is great. ô
ôI find the sporting population a joy to work with as they are motivated and take sport and exercise seriously. Apart from the obvious benefits of regular exercise, it is rewarding to help not only the elite athlete but also the recreational weekend warrior to achieve their goals and get them back from injury.ö
ôI have worked with elite athletes for many years. They can be quite demanding and donÆt suffer fools gladly - so there is the added pressure to properly diagnose their problem, give them accurate rehabilitation advice, and return them to training and playing as quickly as possible. I also thoroughly enjoy seeing the recreational sports person and like to offer them the same level of professionalism that spills over from working within professional sport.ö
ôAway from work, I like to play as much sport as possible being a keen tennis player and golfer - when the weather is good - and also like to combine holidays with scuba diving.ö
