Mr Arjun Shankar is one of Londons leading General Surgeons and is the Divisional Clinical Director of Gastrointestinal Services at University College London Hospitals.

He underwent his surgical training in London based primarily at The Middlesex, University College and Hammersmith Hospitals. His research into the æ Development of Colorectal Liver MetastasesÆ led to the award of an MD within the University of London.

He was privileged to have worked for a number of Internationally renowned surgeons including Mr RCG Russell, Professor RCN Williamson and Professor I Taylor which provided him with a World class training.

On completion of his training he was recruited to replace Mr RCG Russell in order to lead the Internationally renowned Surgical Unit that specialised in the management of Pancreatic disease.

The unit has developed under Mr A Shankars leadership and is now one of the largest centres for pancreatic disease in Europe with a particular interest in Pancreatitis and advanced surgery for pancreatic cancer. The units published mortality/morbidity rates are amongst the lowest in the world.

He also leads the Abdominal Sarcoma unit which is part of the London Sarcoma Service based at University College Hospital. The unit is one of the busiest in Europe and offers the most advanced surgical techniques found anywhere in the World with exceptional outcomes. He is able to offer his patients both open and laparoscopic techniques and directs a Multidisciplinary team of subspecialists who are world leaders in their fields.

Mr Shankar runs the æ Hernia ClinicÆ which offers the full range of both open and laparoscopic techniques. He has a particular interest in dealing with complex recurrences and complications referred from elsewhere and is able to offer patients the most advanced reconstructive technologies and techniques available. The unit is able to reconstruct even the largest and most complex defects, many related to previous operative procedures.

Mr Shankar has established a busy emergency general surgical practice offering the full range of surgical techniques including minimal access surgery (MAS). He runs a team of healthcare professionals who specialise in managing acutely unwell patients which include Intensive care, acute care physicians and dedicated acute anaesthetists. This Acute care MDT has produced exceptional outcomes for even the most high risk patients undergoing emergency surgery and is the leading provider of acute surgery in London.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership he was appointed to the position of Divisional Clinical Director at University College Hospitals which is one of the leading Health Trusts in the UK and Europe and is one of only 5 academic health science centres in Great Britain.
