Theatre Users Committee
The Theatre Users' Committee promotes a working partnership between the theatre staff and its medical users and provides an opportunity for communication between various stakeholders. It is a valuable forum for promulgating new ideas, agreeing strategy and reporting on the effectiveness of current processes and audit outcomes.
ICU / HDU
We have the equipment to support Level 3 ICU/HDU needs, including two dedicated HDU beds and three flexible ICU beds which can also be used for HDU. All beds are fully monitored and linked to a central monitor located at a nursing observation station.
ICU or HDU should be booked in advance for patients who you expect to require critical care. We recommend booking in advance if your patient will be undergoing a long procedure or is indicated as being at high risk due to their past medical history. However, our unit is fully supported at all times for planned and unplanned admissions.
If your patient is in for a long stay, their care must be coordinated by a lead clinician. We are able to call case conferences for both planned and managed patient care.
Patients in need of renal replacement therapy will be transferred to the Harley Street Clinic.
ICU / HDU Staffing / Medical Cover
The unit is supported by a full establishment of highly experienced ICU nurses.
24 hour cover is provided by an ICU Fellow on-call rota. This rota is shared with the King Edward VII Hospital, the Harley Street Clinic and the London Clinic. The fellows are of a Senior Registrar Grade and during their on-call hours they are based at the Princess Grace Hospital. The ICU fellow will visit the unit daily whilst your patient is being treated.
We also have the services of an on-call consultant intensivist provided by a rota of four consultants with a lead clinician.
Please note that it is a requirement of the National Minimum Care Standards that the responsible consultant visits the patient twice daily as a minimum.
Sessions
Permanent theatre sessions can be arranged through the surgical services manager.
Session usage is monitored in order to maximise theatre utilisation and maintain a flexible service to all our consultants. Please let us know in advance if you will not be using your session.
Booking
For ease and quickness, all bookings should be made through Theatre Reservations.
We need to know in advance if you require specialist instrumentation, as some items may need to be obtained on loan if we do not carry them. Please note that loan items may have a significant cost implication affecting the package price for the patient.
Schedule
Theatre lists start from 7.30am with staggered start times. To allow for adequate staffing and good working conditions, elective surgery must end by 9.00pm.
On-call cover is available between 9pm and 7.30am Monday to Friday and weekends out of hours.
Saturday theatre sessions are available by arrangement with the theatre manager.
